  •  Delphi -

  • Once known primarily for its free message boards, Delphi is now offering a very basic free Web page service. Delphi's "Personal Home Page Builder," makes this service particularly appealing to new Web authors (although more experienced Webmasters will find the builder much too limiting). The online builder is easy to use; just fill in the forms to create your page.

Cons - You must display their banner and you may not display more than four image files at one time on your site).

  •  Netcolony.com -

  • This is a fast-growing new free Web page provider that offers a generous 35 megabytes of space. One big plus here is that they don't burden your site with annoying pop-up windows (although they do require you to display a banner). There are helpful tutorials here on HTML and site design, as well as information on graphics, site promotion, Java and more.

  •  Family Point

  • Here's a free service that lets you set up a "meeting place" for your family in cyberspace. Just sign up and set up your own space on Family Point and then you can take advantage of features like a calendar for keeping everyone up to date. There's also a place to post your photos, an address book, chat, discussion groups and E-mail. (When you sign up here, you'll be eligible for Family Point's "Scratch It Rich Sweepstakes," which is offering a number of cash prizes).

  • Virtual Avenue

  • We've been hearing a lot of good things from our visitors about this free Web hosting service. Their package looks impressive. Here, you get "unlimited" traffic and E-mail forwarding, as well as a true FTP account. Virtual Avenue also offers you 20 megs of space, (but note that no one individual file you upload may be larger than 1.2 megs). You also get CGI access from your own directory (a rarity among free hosters).

Con - There's a good FAQ to get you started. The only "catch" here is that you must display their pop-up banner.

  •  Channel21.com

  • A new free Web space provider that offers you 12 megabytes of space for your personal or business Web site. If you're a beginner, there's an easy "point and click" utility for building your Web site. There's also an "Expert Builder" that allows more experienced users to create their own HTML coding. No spamming allowed here. Channel21.com offers some of the best tech support of any free Web hoster.

  •  Qwik Pages

  • This new service lives up to its name. Just fill out a short form and you'll get your own free 10-megabyte Web site, along with your own free E-mail address. You edit and upload pages here through their online "Qwik Builder" utility, which is easy to use.

  •  WebJump

  • WebJump offers a generous 25 megabytes of space. It's easy to get set up at this speedy hoster. WebJump offers a publishing tool that makes it easy to create pages here, even if you're a newbie with no HTML coding experience. There's also a free shopping cart option, if you want to do commerce on your site. Note that you must display their 150-by-60 pixel banner on each page.  WebJump offers phone and pager support (with a 30-minute turnaround) to assist you if your site goes down. They say they'll make "every effort" to respond to other tech support requests within 24 hours.

  •  ACMEcity

  • A new free Web space provider that encourages users to build fan sites for their favorite celebrities, TV shows, music stars, etc. Here, you get 20 megabytes of space, message board, free E-mail and "official artwork and photos" of top celebrities. You may either build your site with their "Homebuilder" utility or you may upload your own content via FTP. ACMEcity is a joint venture between Warner Bros. Online and FortuneCity.com. (Sites here are required to display 468X60 pixel banners).

  •  Angelfire Communications

  • A major free Web space provider, Angelfire recently decreased the amount of free Web space it offers from 10 megs to 5 megs. However, if you use graphics from their stock collection, they're not counted against your space limit. This service is paid for by sponsored annoying pop-up banner ads (Thankfully, you can opt to switch them off). You may advertise your business, but you may not have paid advertising banners on your page. Angelfire offers lots of helpful advice for getting you up and running with your own Web site, even if you're new to Web site authoring.

Con - This is one of the most reliable free Web hosting services. Note, though, that you can only upload one file at a time and that Angelfire lacks subdirectories.

  •  Crosswinds Internet Communications

  • This site offers free ad-free personal Web pages, with "unlimited space," free E-mail and other goodies, like free Majordomo mailing lists. Free Web space for businesses is also available, although for these types of sites, there's a 25-megabyte limit and you must display a banner on your main page, "above the fold." You may upload your page via FTP or with their upload service that you access through your browser. No porn, "warez" (pirated material) or spamming allowed.

Tripod - The second largest free Web page service (after Yahoo! GeoCities), Tripod also subjects its visitors to annoying pop-up advertising banners, an increasing trend among free space providers. You get 11 megabytes of space for your site at this service, which is owned by the major search engine, Lycos. Here, you have two options: if you're a beginner, you can use the "Quickpage" option if you want Tripod to write your page's coding. If you know HTML coding, you can do it yourself through the "Custom" option. Once you've signed up with Tripod, be sure to check with Chris's HTML Tutorial Center for a great step-by-step guide on HTML and Web page making.

Tripod offers support for Microsoft FrontPage extensions, which means that if you own this commercial Web authoring package, you have more flexibility in what you can do with your site, (such as the ability to easily add text searches). However, we've had a number of complaints that Tripod's FrontPage server is slow and buggy.

  •  FortuneCity.com

  • Stake your claim at this major free Web space provider that uses a city theme. Some people will probably find this concept appealing; others are annoyed by it, judging from our feedback. Fortune City.com offers 20 megs of space and they've added subdirectory support, making it easier to manage your files. (However, although you get 20 megs, no individual file may be larger than one megabyte).

Pro - FortuneCity.com now offers free Web hosting services in Britain, Germany, France, and Sweden as well as a Spanish language service.

  •  Free Sites Network

  • These people offer 20 megs of Web space and "unlimited" data transfer. You also get server side includes, nightly backups of data, FTP uploading and 24-hour monitoring. No files over 100 kilobytes allowed and no "warez" (illegal software, cracks, serials) allowed.

Con -We've heard of a few complaints that this service is slow in issuing new accounts. Also, you're required to display a large, slow-loading banner at the top of each page, as well as two smaller thumbnail banners at the bottom of each page.

  •  Yahoo! GeoCities

  • Now a part of search portal Yahoo's empire, GeoCities is the Web's largest free space provider, with over 3.5 million "Homesteaders." GeoCities offers you 11 megabytes of space. You start out by staking your claim in a GeoCities "neighborhood" that offers pages with similar themes to yours (there are over 40 to select from). You then submit an application and are given a password for use in creating your own personal home page. You may then use GeoCities' file manager utility to create your home page. Or, you may submit your custom home page and graphics files using their "EZ File Upload Utility." You can also upload your Web page and other files using an FTP client such as this. Like many free Web hosters, GeoCities requires members to either display an annoying pop-up banner, or a regular banner at the top of their pages. They also place a "watermark," image at the bottom of your pages, which some of our visitors have complained causes problems with their HTML.

After Yahoo swallowed up GeoCities we had a number of complaints about their terms of service, which had many folks concerned about the requirement that you give them "royalty-free" use of your content. After a storm of protest, Yahoo! GeoCities on July 6 issued a revised terms of service agreement, which appears to be a vast improvement (and led to the end of a Yahoo boycott

Con - One drawback to GeoCities' popularity is that many of its "neighborhoods" are full, which means that you may wind up with a lengthy, hard-to-remember URL, such as http://www.geocities.com/AreaName/AnotherAreaName/1234.
GeoCities offers a free affiliate program, Pages That Pay, that lets you earn commissions of up to 15 percent for displaying ads on your site. If you're participating in this program, we'd like to hear like to hear about your experiences with it.
Some of our visitors report periodic access woes here. A number of complaints have also been posted on Yahoo! GeoCities' message boards lately about vanishing pages. We've also had complaints that support is difficult to obtain. However, other visitors report that assistance is readily available through the service's "Community Leaders," who may be reached via E-mail or ICQ.

Big Pro - GeoCities offers a WYSIWYG online HTML editor, which makes it easier for beginners to make pages.
In August 1998, a federal agency accused GeoCities of misusing children's personal information by making it available to third parties. In response, GeoCities agreed to settle the case, promising to modify its site.
